Frequently Asked Questions about Residential Framing

How long does the framing phase take in a Boston home renovation or addition?
Framing timelines vary by the size and complexity for the project, and we make sure to keep you updated on our progress and timeframes throughout the project. Feel free to Contact Us to discuss your project in depth, and once we evaluate your property and the project itself we can give you an expected timeline for completion
What should I expect during the framing inspection process in Massachusetts?
Once the framing is complete, a city or town building inspector will verify compliance with the Massachusetts Building Code - They will schedule a time to check structural soundness, safety measures, and other parameters designed to keep you, your family and your community safe by building a structurally sound building - Approval at this step allows us to continue to the next phase of building.
Can existing framing be reused, or does it always need full replacement?
Sometimes existing framing can be reused if it is structurally sound, level, and meets code. However, as surprising as it might sound, this doesn't happen very often in Greater Boston or the Northeast. Just one winter's freeze can cause cause shifting that can make structures just slightly skewed, which sets off a ripple effect into all of the surrounding frame. The result: significant amounts of custom cutting, which costs time and money. In the grand scheme of things, it may be less expensive to remove all the old materials and just start new! We will always look at your home specifically to decide what might be able to be reused, or if it is worth it in your case to just start fresh!
How much does framing typically cost for a home renovation in the Greater Boston area?
Costs depend on scale, materials, and access - smaller scope projects might range in the low thousands, while more extensive framing for second floors or large additions can run into tens of thousands. Site conditions, structural changes, and access in dense Boston neighborhoods can affect pricing.
What impact does weather or seasonality in New England have on framing work?
Winter and late-fall in the Boston region can slow framing due to cold, snow or frozen ground which complicates exterior work and material delivery. Efficient scheduling and weather protection are key to staying on track. We will always discuss this with you for your project and if it may impact our time frames!
I live in a multi-unit building in Boston. Are there special considerations for framing?
Yes - apartment or condo framing often involves fire-rated assemblies, sound control, limited access and strict inspection requirements. We are very experienced with this process in and around Boston, which helps to keep your project running smoothly.
Can framing work be done while the homeowner lives in the house?
Yes! But, it does depend on the project size. Smaller framing jobs may allow homeowners to stay in place. Major structural changes might require moving out temporarily or establishing safe zones to limit dust, noise and interruption.
